somewhat different version of where this family lived, indicating they were in Rockingham County, Virginia, for a
few
years before going to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Clarence Brent Allman 1939 (reprinted 1995), The Life and Times of Lewis Wetzel. John Wetzel immigrated with
Martin Wetzel from Holland via Switzerland in 1747. After his marriage in 1756, he moved to Rockingham
County,
Virginia, and eventually to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Wills De Hass 1851, History of the Early Settlement and Indian Wars of Western Virginia, pp. 344-365. John
was one of the first settlers on Wheeling Creek. He died in 1787 near Captina, at Baker's Station, killed by
Indians.
He left seven children: Martin, Lewis, Jacob, John, George, Susan and Christina.

by Indians near Captina Creek while returning home by canoe from Middle Island Creek.
Harry G. Enoch 1999, Affair at Captina Creek, p. 46. Buried at Baker's Fort, now hidden under the slag heaps at
Graveyard Run. When the industrial part was constructed at Cresap Bottom, the old graveyard markers were
moved to
the Americana Roadside Park just across Route 2. Then when that highway was widened, John Wetzel's marker
was moved to a cemetery of McCreary Ridge, east of Moundsville. Jackson County, West Virginia, Past and
